There were mainly 5 Muslim dynasties that ruled over Delhi before the Mughal empire started ruling India during the medieval period. These 5 dynasties are Slave dynasty, Khilji dynasty, Tughlaq dynasty, Sayyid dynasty and Lodi dynasty. They are collectively called Delhi Sultanate.
The first Muslim dynasty to rule over Delhi was Slave dynasty. It is also called Mamluk dynasty. They were the first Muslim rulers in India. The important kings of Slave dynasty are Qutb ud-Din Aibak, Shams ud-Din Iltutmish, Razia Sultana and Ghiyas ud-Din Balban.
The second Muslim dynasty to rule over Delhi was Khilji dynasty. The rulers of this dynasty were very ferocious. The important kings of Khilji dynasty are Jalaluddin Khilji, Mubarak Khilji and Alauddin Khilji, who is the greatest among all the Delhi Sultans.
The third Muslim dynasty to rule over Delhi was Tughlaq dynasty. The important kings of this dynasty are Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, Muhammad bin Tughlaq and Firoz Shah Tughlaq. Muhammad bin Tughlaq is widely known for his experiments like bringing in Token currency, shifting the capital from Delhi, etc.
The fourth Muslim dynasty to rule over Delhi was Sayyid dynasty. This dynasty is not that much famous. The important kings of this dynasty are Sayyid Khizr Khan and Mubarak Shah.
The fifth and last Muslim dynasty to rule over Delhi was Lodi dynasty. The important kings of this dynasty are Bahlul Lodi, Sikandar Lodi and Ibrahim Lodi. The city of Agra was built by Lodi dynasty. Mughal prince Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi to establish Mughal rule in India.
